About the Artist - Originally from Hyogo, Japan, Mai is a masterful player and teacher of the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument. Under the tutelage of the world-renowned koto virtuoso Kazue Sawai, she earned her teaching license from the Sawai Koto Institute in 2014, receiving an Honorable Mention Award. Mai has captivated audiences in Japan as well as in Australia, where she resided for nearly six years.

​Her passion extends beyond preserving the timeless elegance of Japanese art; Mai enjoys infusing contemporary creativity into koto music including experimenting with various artists, ranging from clarinetists to sitarists and also visual artists. Recently having moved to Dubai, UAE, she is eager to resonate with the local community and explore the koto's possibilities through new cross-cultural collaborations, embracing the region's rich cultural heritage.
